BrightWorkpapers 26.7.1 Release Notes
Release Date: 17 July 2026
This is a major release featuring significant new integrations and improvements to data import capabilities, alongside quality enhancements.
🚀 Major Features
Atosa: ATO Direct Data Integration
Now available for Australian practitioners
BrightWorkpapers now integrates directly with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) via Atosa, allowing you to retrieve client data automatically without manual entry. This flagship feature streamlines the audit process for Australian firms.
Key capabilities:
Request and retrieve ATO client data directly within your workpapers (activity statements, tax transactions, fund queries)
Automatic data injection into audit templates for immediate use
Clear validation and error handling — knows when data feeds are not activated or clients aren't linked to ATO accounts
Background processing ensures your audit work continues uninterrupted while data loads
Getting started: Link your client to an ATO taxpayer account, activate the data feed, and click the new "Request Data" button on any ATO workpaper. Data refreshes in the background and updates automatically.
SMSF Dashboard — Enhanced Document Management & Notifications
Continued investment in the SMSF Dashboard for self-managed superannuation fund audits.
What's improved:
File Format Support: Added support for .html and .zip files in document uploads, bringing full parity with the legacy SMSF portal
Upload Reliability: Fixed silent failures and unclear error messages that previously left clients unable to diagnose upload issues
Smart Notifications: Real-time notification banners alert external firm users to pending fund queries and other actions requiring attention
Email Integration: Notification emails now link directly to the relevant dashboard page, reducing navigation steps
Better UX: Fixed document deletion issue where cancelling a deletion request was not being respected
Data Import & General Ledger Enhancements
Significant improvements to trial balance and journal entry import from accounting software (Xero, Sage, SuperMate).
Key fixes:
Character Encoding: Fixed failures with special characters in journal entries and GL account codes
Type Safety: Corrected data type mismatches between GL account codes that were silently corrupting import data
Error Handling: Errors during import from SuperMate are now properly caught and reported instead of being silently swallowed
Xero Integration: Fixed PHP errors when importing from Xero API in development environments
Excel Preview: Resolved "Couldn't Open the Workbook" error when previewing Excel files in Office Online embedded viewer
Ongoing Reliability: Continued reliability improvements to trial balance and general ledger imports, including CSV imports and dual code files
Standard Reporting Codes & Automation Mapping
BrightWorkpapers now lets you map your chart of accounts to a standard set of reporting codes, so automated workpapers can pull the right trial balance and general ledger data regardless of which accounting system a client uses.
Key capabilities:
A new "Automation Code Mapping" screen, available from the Trial Balance menu, lets you review and manage how your accounts map to Standard Reporting Codes for both trial balance and general ledger data
Default mappings pre-populate automatically based on your accounting system, with the option to review and override them
Dual code files automatically detect the accounts production system and apply the matching default mapping
Many-to-one mapping is supported, so multiple accounts can feed a single reporting code
A summary highlights any reporting codes left unmapped, so gaps are easy to spot before running automated workpapers
When importing a general ledger via CSV, you can now specify the bookkeeping software the data comes from, matching the trial balance import experience
The mapping screen locks once a file is completed and archived, consistent with other file areas
✨ User Experience Improvements
UI Enhancements for Automated Data Inputs
Clearer visual distinction for ATO and other automated dataset input fields
Improved status indicators showing when data has been refreshed or requires action
Progress Bar Interactions
Progress bar rows on completion tracking now respond to full-width clicks (not just the tick box)
Consistent hover states across interactive rows
Other Usability Improvements
Planning lockdown behaviour is now consistent when sharing workpaper groups or applying firm templates
Chart of Accounts access, Completion Report actions, and Conclusions now behave consistently across file states
Workpaper navigation and firm notifications are more reliable following the rebrand update
Firm and industry template lists are more consistent when creating templates or setting up status profiles
Better performance and reliability across trial balance uploads and imports
🔒 Security
A number of security updates have been applied in this release.
