Intro
This release introduces a number of improvements and fixes across BrightWorkpapers. Everything below is live from 25 September 2026.
New Features
Excel Connect: prior year figure retrieval
Excel Connect can now automatically retrieve prior year comparative figures for Standard Reporting Code (SRC) workpapers. This works whether your chart of accounts uses single or dual reporting codes, so comparative balances populate automatically without manual calculation.
See who signed off a checklist item
On checklist items with Yes/No/N/A answers, BrightWorkpapers now shows the name of the person who last made that selection, updating automatically if someone else changes it later — matching the existing behaviour on Programme building blocks. This applies to files created from now onwards; it does not add attribution to items in existing files.
Improvements & Fixes
Flow Analysis now available for CSV-imported general ledgers Flow Analysis, the transaction flow graph on the General Ledger page, is now available when a general ledger is uploaded via CSV, in addition to the existing support for ledgers imported through Xero. Tag: BrightWorkpapers
General Ledger access now appropriately restricted for read-only users The General Ledger option is no longer available to read-only users viewing a file. Users with standard access continue to see and use the General Ledger page exactly as before. Tag: BrightWorkpapers
Clearer Trial Balance, Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet status messages The Trial Balance, Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet pages have received wording and status improvements. Clearing an imported trial balance now correctly resets the status message to "Trial balance not yet imported", and the import status message has been simplified for clarity, including for consolidated Group Audit files. Internal accounting structures now consistently hidden from selection The setting that hides internal-use-only accounting structures from selection now also applies consistently when uploading a general ledger and on the Clients tab within Client Details, matching how it already works elsewhere. Existing files that already use an internal accounting structure continue to work as normal. Tag: BrightWorkpapers
Monthly and Quarterly file creation now handles template changes correctly You can now change the file template while creating a Monthly or Quarterly file without the Create New File button becoming unavailable. This only affects the Monthly and Quarterly file creation screens; other file types were not affected. Tag: BrightWorkpapers
File search and File Details now work correctly for a small set of older files Searching for a file by name in My Files, and opening its File Details page, now work correctly for a small set of older Iris Open Audit files that were missing certain file information. This completes an earlier fix for the same files, which already corrected their file heading, client information and Workflow Manager display. Tag: BrightWorkpapers
Firm templates now correctly retain their engagement type When creating a firm template from a related industry template that supports both Audit and Group Audit engagements, the new firm template now correctly takes on the file type you selected — Audit or Group — matching how this already works when creating a new file or rolling one forward. Templates that only support a single engagement type are unaffected. Tag: BrightWorkpapers
Ongoing security improvements We've strengthened the security of how certain account information is protected, as part of our ongoing work to keep your data safe. No action is needed from you. Tag: BrightWorkpapers
Document renaming on Lead Schedules now saves correctly When uploading a document to a Lead Schedule or Lead Schedule Summary and entering a custom name for it at the same time, that name is now saved correctly, matching how this already worked on the Trial Balance. No documents or data were affected by this issue. Tag: BrightWorkpapers
Client names with a comma can now be created from the New File screen You can now create a new client with a comma in their name (for example, entering it as "Surname, Forename") directly from the New File screen, matching how client creation already worked from the Clients page. Improved reliability for the ATO data integration For Australian practices using our direct ATO data integration, requests that previously did not come through are now processed as expected. Tag: BrightWorkpapers — Australia
